3 Factors Employers Actually Review About Recent Graduates
3 Factors Employers Actually Review About Recent Graduates There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the hiring process straight out of college. Much of the misinformation is rooted in the fact that every employer and recruiting firm operates differently. But with that being said, there are some common threads when it comes to an attractive resume. For employers, hiring is big business. It doesnât matter if theyâre hiring someone to fill an opening in the C-suite or bringing in a recent college graduate for an entry-level position, the cost of employee onboarding is always high. According to Deloitte research, recruiting expenses alone average $4,000 per position. Then there are training costs, equipment and supplies, and usually a temporary loss in productivity. By the time the process is completed, hiring a new employee can cost more than $10,000 (not counting actual pay). Having said that, most employers are spending more time evaluating talent in order to ensure theyâre making the right decisions. In terms of recent graduates, hereâs what theyâre looking at: 1. College pedigree Thereâs always some debate among students, universities, recruiters, and businesses about whether or not college pedigree â" or the reputation of the school â" matters. In most cases, the answer is no. The difference between getting a business degree from your local community college and a large public university in the state probably isnât that significant. (Though the difference between a degree from your local community college and Harvard Business School would matter.) College pedigree matters most in industries like healthcare, where employers meticulously review school program rankings. Higher program rankings are touted by institutions and used as recruiting tools. Therefore, graduation from a program like Rush University â" which has seven nursing programs listed in the most recent U.S. News World Report rankings â" carries some clout. 2. GPA and relevant coursework A second factor employers and recruiters look at is GPA. The exact number doesnât matter as much as what the number indicates. For example, having a 3.7 versus 3.8 isnât going to keep you from getting a job offer. But if you finish with a 4.0 in a program where most graduates average a 3.25, then you have a differentiating factor. On a related note, many companies will also look at relevant coursework and whether or not your classroom training has prepared you for the challenges youâll face on the job. 3. Internships and work experience Outside of the classroom, what have you done to prove that youâre a good candidate? Internships and work experience are a must in competitive job markets. Employers expect you to have some relevant experience and donât like to take chances on candidates who coasted through their college careers. Volunteering and extracurricular activities matter, too. Things like fraternity or sorority membership, intramural sports involvement, and participation in various on-campus groups and clubs can boost your appeal as a candidate with varying skills and interests. Develop yourself into a well-rounded graduate If youâre a college student, the most important thing you can do is work on becoming a better-rounded individual. Having a 4.0 GPA wonât do you any good if you donât have any work experience. Accumulating 1,000 volunteer hours wonât matter if your GPA is a 2.5. Attending an Ivy League school will have little bearing if you have multiple arrests on your record. When it comes to hiring recent graduates, employers are looking for individuals who are well-rounded. From their perspective, these are the candidates who generally provide a healthy return on investment. Are you spending your college career prioritizing the factors that employers are evaluating? Twentysomething Raunchy old photos will be part of the revolution
Twentysomething Raunchy old photos will be part of the revolution By Ryan Healy During my senior year at Penn State, the Nittany Lions knocked off the highly (over) rated Ohio State Buckeyes. It was one of the best football games of my college years. A mob of students rushed down the bleachers, the field became a flood of blue and white. But unfortunately, rushing the field is not a Big Ten-acceptable activity. So the other guys in blue, the police, started an investigation using Facebook to identify suspects. I guess if youre going to perform illegal acts, Facebook, MySpace and other online networks that incorporate photographs are probably not for you. But as we leave our crazy college years behind and enter the workforce, should we really have to worry what recruiters think of our social lives? I have a MySpace page and a Facebook profile. I have hundreds of pictures on each site that show me in both professional and not-so-professional settings. Some people remove their embarrassing or incriminating pictures after college to save some face in the real world. I have never considered removing pictures. Social networking sites are blurring the lines between personal and professional life. There is no reason these lines should not be blurred. Most young people lead very healthy social lives, and because of these websites much of our social lives are online. When you live your personal/social life online there is no escaping who you are and what you do. It may be scary to people not accustomed to the openness of the Internet, but as far as Im concerned, its a refreshing. Why should I pretend to be one person for eight hours a day and someone else entirely for the rest? Its absurd to pretend that everyone at work is a saint. Its just not true. Whats the big deal if our bosses know what we did on Saturday night or what we did in college for that matter? The whole idea of our lives being available for public display is actually pretty cool. Think about it. If the world already knows what we do in our spare time and we are all able to be completely open about our interests, thoughts and ideas without fear of retribution or not being hired then we can bring our whole being to work everyday. Of course, if youre idea of a good time is extremely sick and twisted then you may want to consider keeping things a secret. Better yet, you may want to figure out some better things to do in your spare time to avoid a prison sentence. But for most of us who like to have a little innocent fun, there is no reason to play the Jekyll-and-Hyde role. Jason Warner, head of staffing at Google writes, Today there is a fuzzy, but growing distinction that companies will continue to draw between candidate professional experiences, competencies, and capabilities and their private lives and outside behaviors. Its a line we dont likely want to cross, because if we cross it for candidates, we may cross it for employees, and that compounds the problem. The more young people enter the workforce the less risk there is that someone will Google them to look for bad behavior. Human resources leaders dont have the time to sleuth. But also, there just arent enough perfect little angels in the world to go around. I urge everyone: Lets leave all of our pictures up on whatever social networking sites we use. What we do on the weekends is just as much apart of our lives as our day jobs. Dont be afraid of your boss seeing a risque photo of you and dont be afraid to talk a little business at the bar. The sooner we get past this personal and professional juggling act, the sooner we can see real change in the workplace. Ryan Healys blog is Employee Evolution.

A Well Educated Workforce Is Key to State Prosperity CareerMetis.com
A Well Educated Workforce Is Key to State Prosperity â" CareerMetis.com When a state has a well-educated workforce, it prospers. In fact, a study published in 2006 showed that high school and college attainment rates are factors closely linked with how prosperous a state can become. Also, Noah Bergerâs book, A Well-Educated Workforce is Key to State Prosperity reflects upon how states can improve their growth rates by making education attainment a priority.States With Higher Education Attainment Tend Are Generally More SuccessfulevalevalWe cannot get around the fact that we live in a globally competitive job market where performance is key for the individual worker, the company they work for, and for the states and countries themselves.States who make it a priority to raise the standard of living for their citizens also tend to make education a priority. Investing in education is one of the best solutions to increasing state success.States with higher college education attainment rates have seen higher productivity rates among their workforce population s.Also, since higher productivity rates are associated with better wages for workers, states with a more educated workforce are far more likely to have higher median wages. In the long-run, state budgets benefit from investing in education since educated workers are able to contribute more to taxes throughout their careers since they tend to become higher wage-earners than their counterparts who do not receive a college education.Education and Economic Policy Development Go Hand-in-handIn the state of Indiana, policy analysts are carefully considering the arguments Berger makes in his book and are looking into ways to slow down college tuition rate hikes, enhance financial aid opportunities for prospective students, invest in better K-12 educational opportunities, and develop new university programs that will attract students. The goal of developing economic policies to advance educational opportunities is to create more driven and self-sufficient workers who will not need to rely on governmental welfare assistance programs to help them get by.evalSimply trying to attract the interest of out-of-state private investors or cutting taxes to appeal more to employers are short-run strategies that have already proven to be ineffective, so economic policies geared at improving a stateâs prosperity are focusing increasingly more on education.Stabilizing and Boosting Struggling State and Local EconomiesWhen an area has an increasing population of well-educated workers, there tends to be a more pronounced local resilience to both economic and social declines. In fact, highly-educated workers with entrepreneurial minds tend to go the extra mile to develop new and successful economic trends within their communities.States and their communities also become safer when there is more emphasis placed on education. As Lochner and Moretti demonstrate, high school graduation and college education stave off crime, thereby reducing social expenses on incarceration and law enforcemen t.How Online Resources Can HelpevalAs many of you are well aware, college is expensive, and it doesnât always provide students with all of the resources they need. One of the ways that individuals can access resources to help them with their education and to become more productive workers is through websites like coursera, simplilearn, khan academy and Course Hero, which are learning platforms that students can use to access tutors, look up study resources, and share their own study resources with other students. The company is transparent about their objectives and achievements and offers up a great work environment for educators.Essentially, productivity breeds productivity, and students who are able to access online resources and share with one another are giving back to their states by propelling themselves forward as better-educated members of the workforce.Overall, states can benefit from having a well-educated workforce since this tends to drive up productivity and median inco me levels.States with better college attainment rates are seeing some positive economic and social growth, showing other states that education is not so much an expense as it is a return on a good investment.

College Prep Essay Writing Tips For High School Students
College Prep Essay Writing Tips For High School StudentsOne of the most common resume writing tips for high school students is to include their name on the cover page. The benefit of including their name at the top of the cover page is that it allows them to stand out from the rest of the resumes in the pile. It also helps get their attention. It helps with getting to the interview if they look their best. However, in some cases, including your name at the top of the resume is not enough. You need to include all of your accomplishments at your school, such as your honors class, ACT or SAT scores, etc. After this is done, then you can go about filling out the rest of the resume as you would normally do with any other college application.Another of the resume writing tips for high school students is to include their contact information on the resume. In some cases, this may include an email address, but in many cases it does not. In some cases, it will be the school counselor or staff a dvisor's email address that you can use. Most of the time, you will want to include the person's contact information. When it comes to letters of recommendation, include their full name, title and contact information. Remember that in many cases, you will need to provide other personal information and it may be harder to type out the full contact information for those who have become part of the school's mailing list. These are just a few of the resume writing tips for high school students. There are other ways to make a resume more appealing to hiring managers, such as including the school's colors, logos, or color scheme, but this is usually reserved for graduate level applications.Resume writing tips for high school students can be divided into three categories. While these are very general, remember that even though they may be brief, they still hold the potential to be very effective in getting a job interview.First, there are resume writing tips for high school students that inc lude using the paper you wrote on when you were working at home. Many times, people who have majored in their areas will write essays. While you may not be able to learn everything you want to know from a printed assignment, the best resume writing tips for high school students include doing research on a website that caters to your field of study, such as the Internet or a book.Second, resume writing tips for high school students include using as many different colors as possible on the resume. It is important to use different colors for different sections. For example, a college-level curriculum can be written in different colors to create the illusion that it is organized, and different colors can be used for the yearbook's presentation to make it more attractive to your prospective employer.
